“Working on Pierre Rode’s violin concertos for the past 10 years has been a source of great pleasure.

Having practised the Rode études as a teenager and taught them later to my students, the concertos came as a wonderful new discovery. They are not at all merely ‘technical’ works, but beautifully orchestrated, lyrical pieces, highly virtuosic with intelligent, charming, even humorous ideas. Rode was a great inventor and absorbed many influences from different music cultures, writing polonaises on Russian themes, for example.

This fifth volume concludes our recording of Rode’s 13 violin concertos (all of them world premiere recordings). I continue to play them in public and hope you will take as much pleasure listening to the concertos as I had in discovering them.”

Pierre RODE (1774–1830)
Violin Concertos Nos. 11 and 12

Friedemann Eichhorn, Violin
Jena Philharmonic • Nicolás Pasquet

As a leading virtuoso who premiered Beethoven’s final violin sonata with the Archduke Rudolph, Rode was at the centre of European musical life, his compositions sitting at the apex of the French violin school. The final volume in this acclaimed series presents one of his most inspired pieces, the Violin Concerto No. 11 in D major, lyrically expressive and full of good-humoured zest. Violin Concerto No. 12 in E major is notable for the ingenious ways in which, through trills, staccato, spiccato and cadenzas, Rode heightens the music’ s bravura.
