With the 2015 Oscars awards announced on February 22, we take a dip into the Naxos Film Music Classics to highlight great music used in classic blockbusters – not off-the-peg melodies borrowed from classical compositions as background wash, but original scores that were often as dazzling as the star actors they accompanied.

The Naxos Film Music Classics is a series devoted to re-recordings of the finest original orchestral film scores, often painstakingly reconstructed by film music experts. The series features both established classical composers, who occasionally worked in cinema, and émigré composers steeped in the European classical tradition, whose eloquent romanticism defined the sound of Hollywood’s Golden Age.
