After writing a hundred lighter stage works, Offenbach created in his second opera, Les contes d'Hoffmann - an account of E.T.A. Hoffmann's life - a work that is still very popular all over the world. This unfinished "fantastic opera in five acts" had a checkered performance history, though, due to the immense number of alterations and arrangements it endured. Until Fritz Oeser's 1977 critical edition, the clumsy 1907 version by Chouden was the only one accepted. But the new edition by Michael Kaye, and the discovery of the original libretto manuscript, allowed the opera to be reconstructed along lines originally intended by the composer. The version presented here on DVD is a new staging of Jacques Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann that was produced at the "Opéra de Lyon" in 1993, a recording of outstanding technical quality. Numerous world-class stars sing in Louis Erlo's tasteful production; and the musical direction of choir and orchestra lies in the capable hands of Kent Nagano, a conductor whose experience is by no means limited to French repertoire.
