11014-2 - ASTRAL JAZZ: Dreams of Flying

Radha Wardrop was born in Dunedin, on New Zealand's South Island. Her musical inclination was evident when she was quite young, as she sang Bach fugues before she could talk. Her formal training began by learning classical piano and guitar from the age of seven.

Radha's compositions have developed most notably in the area of music for young people. She is recognised as a leading composer of positive educational music and she tours New Zealand giving seminars for professional educators, helping them to develop skills in communication through music. She has created a comprehensive catalogue of albums for ages birth to twelve years to assist advanced development.

Radha's abiding interest in therapeutic and religious music led her to travel to Northern India to study classical Indian music with Ali Akbar Khan in the 'seventies. She says that she finds an unparalleled sense of emotional expression and melody in both classical Indian and Celtic melody, which has always been a source of inspiration for her. She says that she also finds the sensitive, expressive music of artists like Joni Mitchell, Enya and Loreena McKennitt has provided a very positive influence.

Radha's ability to write music that captures the imagination of children developed for her an increasing interest in expressing simple musical essence, rather than complicated and elaborate overstatement. The uncluttered sensual moodscapes of 'Dreams of Flying' demonstrates the success of her concept.

Radha Wardrop plays electric piano and synths, in combination with the breathy saxophones of Damon Grant, the subtle electric guitar of Leigh Jackson and the superbly restrained bass of Paul Dyne, Astral Jazz has created the unique atmosphere titled 'Dreams of Flying'.
