8.553321 - PERTI: Lamentations / Liturgy for Good Friday

Giacomo Antonio Perti was for some sixty years the choir-master at the famous Basilica of San Petronio in Bologna where he taught many of the famous musicians of his time.

He was born in the city in 1661 and was a composer, his works including operas and a considerable amount of church music. Within his own musical establishment, he had a permanent group of thirty-six musicians which were often augmented to four times that number so that he could write on a large scale. Settings for Good Friday have a wonderful contrast between solo voices and choir, and it is music of dramatic intensity and forms an important addition to the Naxos Early Music catalogue.
