8.553346 - BENDA, J.A.: Medea

The Benda family dominated music in Bohemia in the 18th century, their fame and influence spreading to southern Germany. Now their distinguished relation, the conductor and cellist Christian Benda, carries on the family tradition.

Here he directs Jiri Benda's (when he lived in Germany he was known as Georg) most famous work, Medea.

This is a melodrama from 1775 and was considered by many as the forerunner of the modern opera, though in those early times the text was spoken rather than sung.

This magnificent performance recorded in Prague in 1994 has the market totally to itself, irrespective of price.
