'Singer of the World' began in 1983 to celebrate the opening of St David¡¦s Hall in Cardiff.

Watched by eight million viewers worldwide, it is generally regarded as the world's leading vocal competition, having launched a host of stars onto the operatic stage.

Witness the now legendary "Battle of the Baritones" ¡V 1989. It was this year that the 'Song Prize' was introduced. Bryn Terfel was victorious in the Song Prize with Dmitri Hvorostovsky taking the overall Cardiff Singer of the World title.
