Richard Harvey is a graduate of the Royal College of Music whose passion for musical instruments from all around the world, old and new, has led him to work on an extraordinary range of composing projects - from Hollywood movies to TV dramas and documentaries. As a performer, he was a founder of the 'mediaeval rock' band Gryphon and has been a long-time collaborator with John Williams, besides playing as a session man on recordings for Paul McCartney, Kate Bush, Gerry Rafferty, Richard Thompson and many others. His skills as multi-instrumentalist and conductor are often called upon for feature films, including Disney's The Lion King and several of the Harry Potter films.

Richard began his composing career in the 1970s as assistant to the celebrated composer Maurice Jarre. His first work was to provide music for the television series Tales of the Unexpected in 1979. He has subsequently supplied scores to over 80 television and film projects. Notable works include 1979's Martian Chronicles ending titles, the 1983 horror film House of the Long Shadows, 1984's wistful Shroud for a Nightingale theme for the PD James detective series, 1985's Defence of the Realm, Alan Bleasdale's G.B.H in 1991 which he co-wrote with Elvis Costello and which won them a BAFTA award (British Academy of Film and Television Arts). Most recently Richard composed the theme for Ron Howard's The Da Vinci Code and Gabriel Range's Death of a President. He was commissioned to write his first guitar concerto, Concerto Antico (1995), for guitar virtuoso John Williams, and an ambitious cathedral work and eco-musical, Plague and the Moonflower (1989), with artist and writer Ralph Steadman.

Harvey is also a prolific composer of production music. His "Nifty Digits" release (KPM Library #1251) are featured in several Sesame Street segment filmed at the Binney and Smith Crayola crayon factory in Easton, PA. Hi composition "Dynamics" is also the theme song for TBS' World Championship Wrestling.

Since 2005, "John Williams & Richard Harvey's World Tour" has appeared in many different countries, from Shanghai to Singapore, Japan, England, Ireland and Luxembourg. The performances include a mixture of world and classical music spanning five continents and five centuries and their combined virtuosity goes without saying. Yet it is the interplay and warmth between these two great musicians which is wonderful to watch. Williams stretches far beyond the limits of the classical guitar technique while Harvey unleashes a wealth of sound from recorders, pipes, mandolin and percussion to African thumb piano, psaltery and rare Chinese instruments.

Harvey's first recorder concerto (Concerto Incantato) enjoyed its world premiere on Michala Petri's CD English Recorder Concertos released in March 2012, alongside works by Malcolm Arnold and Gordon Jacob. The Altus imprint will now deliver a wide range of recordings featuring TV, Film and concert compositions by Richard Harvey. They will be released on CD and DVD by Altus and distributed worldwide by Wyastone Estate Limited. As music publishers, Bongiovanni started life in 1905 when company founder Francesco Bongiovanni began publishing the works of Respighi, Zandonai, Alfano, and Cimara. Yet it was not until the 1970s that Bongiovanni Records came into existence under Francesco's grandson Giancarlo Bongiovanni, the current head of the company. Today, Bongiovanni Records is run by Giancarlo's son Andrea - the fourth generation of the family in the music business. The Bongiovanni logo was created in 1975 to mark both the founding of Bongiovanni Records and the company's 70th anniversary. And today the logo remains unchanged: a sign of continuity with a long line of successful recordings that began in the mid-1970s and with the pioneering, early days of 1905. Bongiovanni's first recording was a live concert by soprano Mirella Freni which won the Italian Record Critics' Prize in 1975. Until that time, live opera recordings had been strictly unofficial affairs ignored by the majors. That first Bongiovanni recording was followed by many more featuring recitals by world-famous opera singers such as Renato Bruson, Marilyn Horne, Sesto Bruscantini, Martine Dupuy, Carlo Bergonzi, Piero Cappuccilli, Mariella Devia and Giuseppe Giacomini. The Bongiovanni catalogue comprises some 700 items, including rare operas by both celebrated and less familiar composers such as Donizetti, Catalani, Cimarosa, Mercadante, Pergolesi, Bizet, Mascagni and Paisiello. And now those rare operas are also available on Bongiovanni's own line of DVDs.

DuckHole Records was founded with one very simple mission – find, record and promote music and musicians that don't quite fit the marketing niche of most major labels. In fact, the name itself was born from the idea that many talented musicians are difficult to pigeonhole into any particular genre of music, but their music is definitely worthy of reaching a wide audience (there was trademark issues with pigeonhole, so another bird was substituted in and DuckHole Records was born). For many of today's recording artists, the difference in what is recorded on their album and what is heard in their live show is so dramatic that often it is difficult to tell what part is musician and what part is studio magic. With this in mind, the only essential trait that we started looking for in a musician is talent – someone who has the chops to do live what is recorded on the album.

The idea behind Bernhard Drobig’s new “fra bernardo” label is to create an unmistakable profile in the so-called early music sector: young artists and ensembles are to be offered an international platform and at the same time repertoire outside the mainstream is to be made accessible with the aim of closing some glaring gaps.

The most important artists and ensembles include Le Petit Concert Baroque, Philipp von Steinaecker, Musica Saeculorum, Sara Mingardo, Gambe di Legno and The Sound and the Fury, with their own series, Paradise Regained, dedicated to renaissance vocal polyphony.

The aim of this unique series is to bring before the public the art of the great pianists who preserved their interpretations, genius and performing style through the process of making piano roll recordings for the Aeolian Duo-Art company. Many significant artists never made gramophone records or in the case of Busoni made very few and hated doing so! But they did make reproduction piano rolls. Thanks to Mr Stonehill and the late Gordon Iles, inventor and chief theoretician of the Aeolian company in England, it is now possible better to reproduce piano roll recordings made for the Aeolian company as long ago as 1914. This has been achieved through the design and creation of a 'Robot' which incorporates the ultimate Duo-Art technology in order to deliver historic performances exactly as heard and approved by the recording artists themselves. What makes Nimbus' Grand Piano series unique stems from the technical ability of the 'Robot' accurately to reproduce the nuances of the original performances, at concert levels. Duo-Art rolls feature a special set of perforations along both edges of the roll which can control up to 16 different intensities of hammer stroke. This, alongside the ability to vary the volume and intensity of the melody independently of the accompaniment and also independently of the sustaining and soft pedals, creates a series of tonal intensities and gradations beyond the capacity of the human ear to distinguish. Put simply this system does not sound like a machine playing a piano - it sounds like a live pianist. Not only that but because it is so accurate we can distinguish one pianist from another. Consequently this series enables us to hear a style of pianism which is long dead but which has its roots in the great composer-performers of the Romantic era. So, for example we are able to hear a recording of one of Liszt's Grand Etudes de Concert from a roll made in 1924 by Frederic Lamond who at the age of seventeen was taken to study with Liszt in Weimar. All the recordings in the Grand Piano series have been made at the Concert Hall of the Nimbus Foundation using a Steinway Grand. All recordings are fully digital. There are no extraneous noises no mechanisms whirring, no levers squeaking, just pure, amazing piano playing.

The Hallé gave its first concert on 30th January 1858 under the baton of its founder Sir Charles Hallé. Until his death in 1895 Sir Charles conducted almost every concert, and performed as piano soloist at many. His sudden death shocked Manchester and the wider musical world, with his funeral procession bringing the city to a standstill. Three of his closest friends immediately set about securing the future of the Orchestra. The 1895-96 season had already been planned and so Henry Simon, Gustav Behrens and James Forsyth guaranteed it against loss. They renewed this commitment for a further three years whilst they set about forming and incorporating the Hallé Concerts Society. Under the guidance of such distinguished conductors as Hans Richter, Sir Hamilton Harty and Sir John Barbirolli the Orchestra continued to thrive and develop. For the vast majority of its history the Hallé’s home in Manchester was the Free Trade Hall. When war broke out in 1939 the building was requisitioned and of course bombed in the Manchester Blitz. During the war period the Hallé performed concert series in the Albert Hall and Kings Hall Belle Vue, as well in various other venues in and around Manchester including a variety of cinemas. The Free Trade Hall was rebuilt, opening with a triumphant season of concerts in 1951. The Hallé performed its last concert there on 30th June 1996 before moving into its magnificent new home just a few minutes walk away at The Bridgewater Hall. Sir Mark Elder joined the Hallé in 2000 and since his arrival there have been a number of major initiatives including the launch of the Hallé’s own CD label in 2003. The label, comprising high quality studio recordings and exceptional live recordings, immediately became noticeable for its diversity and breadth of repertoire. Already, the label includes highly acclaimed interpretations of Elgar’s music, and works by Richard Strauss, Sibelius, Debussy, Wagner, Nielsen, Vaughan Williams and Colin Matthews. In its 150th anniversary year, the Hallé released Sir Mark’s long-awaited and dramatic interpretation of Elgar’s great oratorio ‘The Dream of Gerontius’ which received the 2009 Classic FM Gramophone Choral Award. Other accolades have included a Diapason d’Or for the recording of Debussy’s ‘La Mer’ and the first set of Colin Matthews’ orchestrations of Debussy Preludes, and in 2010, the Hallé became the first orchestra to win two Gramophone Awards in one year, with its recordings of Wagner’s ‘Götterdämmerung’ and Elgar’s Violin Concerto with Thomas Zehetmair.

This was a dream come true, but having witnessed the priorities of a major label at close hand he decided the only way he could continue to make personal, organic music was to walk away and set up his own independent label. The priorities of Integra are personal recordings which may not be big sellers but instead express something individual. The only stipulation is quality. To date LSO Live has released recordings with many of the world’s leading conductors including Valery Gergiev, Bernard Haitink, Mariss Jansons and the late Sir Colin Davis. The label won its first Grammy Award in 2002 and since collected Classical Brit Awards, Gramophone Awards and numerous other international prizes. Ludi Musici is a record label founded in 2006 that specialises mainly in classical music but also explores some areas of “crossover” repertoire – especially repertoire that bridges the gap between classical music and world music. Instead of churning out the kind of “cultural goods” with which the market is already saturated, Ludi Musici offers listeners coherent artistic projects that do not necessarily conform to any particular genre but whose aim is to appeal to the eyes as much as to the ears, and in which the pleasure of listening to the music is complemented by the pleasure of reading about it.

The philosophy of the label is simple: it aims to bring to the attention of the public unusual and varied repertoire from the fields of early music and world music, performed by outstanding artists, accompanied by scholarly and engaging articles, elegant packaging, a substantial and lavishly illustrated booklet, all presented in a sumptuous book/CD format that makes each release an eminently collectable objet d’art that will give its owner hours of pleasure – something to be listened to over and over again, to be read and re-read.

Lumiere Records specializes in classical cross-over recordings.

Richard Itter had a life-long fascination with recording and he habitually acquired professional equipment for disc and tape recording even for solely private use. From his home in Burnham he was able to receive a good signal from the BBC Wrotham transmitter, which was constructed in 1951 and began broadcasting VHF/FM on 2 May 1955. His domestic recordings from BBC transmissions (including Proms, premieres, operas, symphonies and chamber music – more than 1500 works in total), date from 1952-1996. Everything was initially recorded on magnetic tape, but up to 1955 particularly important performances were transferred to acetate disc. These fragile discs were never played and have remained in excellent condition, as have the majority of the tapes which make up the bulk of the collection. In 2014 the Lyrita Recorded Edition Trust begun to transfer this priceless archive and has put in place formal agreements with the BBC and the Musicians Union to enable the release of items from it to the public.

The Network Media Cooperative was set up in October 1979 – in April 1980, with 19 media packages, then in the form of 1-2 sound cassettes with an accompanying little booklet in a small sliding box. Conceived as a project in an oppositional public sphere, their themes focused on social conflicts which today – 30 years on – have become even more potent: among them, unemployment and business crises, nuclear power and the disposal of atomic waste, major construction projects such as Frankfurt’s new airport runway, youth subcultures in search of direction, migration and xenophobia …In those days, only a small part of their program consisted of music from faraway cultures, which was later to become the primary focus. In collaboration with the radio and television broadcaster WDR, they initiated the World Network series, with a total of 49 releases, including more and more co-productions. The discovery of the upright format with two CDs and more space for texts and photos opened up whole new presentation possibilities. With 3 x 2 CDs of Desert Blues we created a new genre, Golden Afrique (vol. 1, 2, 3) documents the golden era of African pop music in the 70s and 80s, anthologies (like Road of the Gypsies, The Soul of Klezmer, Balkan Blues) and musician portraits (Sexteto Mayor, Bratsch, Djivan Gasparyan) became permanent bestsellers. Tbeir musical expeditions and recording trips have taken us to more than 80 countries. The result is a wide and resonant kaleidoscope of the most diverse musical cultures on our planet. The important thing for them – this side of the familiar middle-of-the-road sounds, which are mostly imitations of Anglo-American pop music – was to track down the unpredictable sides of music. These are more likely to be expressed in lively acoustic pieces with a lot of improvisation or in highly emotional ballads.

Label representing the young New York composers and performers whose music slips through the cracks between genres.

New York based New Focus Recordings is an artist led label focusing on contemporary classical recordings that reflect a personal statement on the part of the artists. The label was founded by guitarist Daniel Lippel and composer Peter Gilbert in 2004, with engineer/composer Ryan Streber playing a huge role in its development since 2005. As with many other independent labels, they started this project because they wanted to have creative control over all elements of the recording and post-production process. Another priority for them, especially given the intricacy of so much contemporary music, is to make sure they gave the pieces the necessary time in the sessions and the editing process to capture dynamic performances that remained faithful to the details in the score. They strive to present the repertoire (through the programming, design, and notes) in cohesive albums that feel like works unto themselves, as opposed to collections of individual tracks. New Focus does not have any particular aesthetic agenda; despite our committment to contemporary concert music, they are also interested in older repertoire as well as releases in other genres.

The New York Philharmonic was founded in 1842 by a group of local musicians led by American-born Ureli Corelli Hill, and perform some 180 concerts a year. This pioneering tradition has continued to the present day, with works of major contemporary composers regularly scheduled each season. The ffirst recording distributed by Naxos of America for the New York Philharmonic presents a collection of recordings celebrating Glenn Dicterow, the current concertmaster of the NY Phil, who is retiring this June in 2014, after 34 years serving as concertmaster.

Classical music is on the move. New, living composers bring a breath of fresh air to the genre. First Arvo Pärt, now Ludovico Einaudi, Max Richter and Nils Frahm. Artists who are big names on stage and on record. So BERLIN CLASSICS is starting the first label to deal exclusively with this phenomenon: NEUE MEISTER. On NEUE MEISTER we present the “new masters”, composers who are imbued with the spirit of the old masters and mix it with fresh, contemporary influences. They run the label’s musical gamut from large orchestral works to electro trio albums and minimal piano. Federico Albanese launches the programme with his minimal piano album “The Blue Hour”. Johannes Motschmann and Christian Jost will follow. Accompanied from February 29 by three big concert evenings in Berlin. Classics of today for people of today. New masters today – old masters tomorrow. Enjoy!

NIGHTINGALE CLASSICS celebrates its 20th year anniversary. Established in 1992, the Swiss label dedicates itself mostly to the art of singing, especially that of the Italian Belcanto era and of the art song repertoire. Nightingale’s biggest achievement is the documentation of most operatic roles sung by Star- Soprano Edita Gruberova. Her Rossini, Donizetti and Bellini heroines are the jewels of the catalogue. Aria collections such as „The Queen of Belcanto“, „Donizettis Tudor-Königinnen“ or „The Art of Gruberova“, demonstrate the exceptional star-status of this special artist. Distributed world-wide by Naxos, Nightingale also assists in the promotion and development of the young generation of singers, by giving them the platform to present their talent in the international records market.

Nimbus Records was founded in the early 1970s with a mission to record the performances of classical musicians. The Company's founder, Numa Labinsky, was an exceptional singer and wanted particularly to recreate a similar sense of presence and involvement to that experienced through live performance on recordings. He quite simply disliked records and thought they could, and should, be better. Achieving this simple goal required repeated innovation across three decades and has, step-by-step, led Nimbus on a long journey.

Established with the aim of recording the best of contemporary British music to the highest artistic and technical standards, NMC Recordings – which celebrated the 20th anniversary of its first release in 2009 – was founded in 1988 with funding from the Holst Foundation and assistance from the Society for the Promotion of New Music. Following the success of two pilot releases the following year – Jonathan Harvey's Bhakti, and a disc of contemporary piano music performed by composer Michael Finnissy – NMC became an independent registered charity; it has since established itself as "Britain's most important producer of CDs of interesting new or recent and neglected work from this country" (The Sunday Times).

NMC’s 20th anniversary was marked in April 2009 by its largest-scale project to date, and its first venture into commissioning: The NMC Songbook is a collection of songs by nearly 100 composers, over 4 discs, specially written to mark the label’s anniversary, and performed at a series of concerts at Kings Place, where they were also recorded. The NMC Songbook won the 2009 Classic FM Gramophone Award for contemporary music. Other major projects throughout the year included Unknown Britten – featuring a premiere recording of three additional songs intended as part of Les Illuminations – and Sir Peter Maxwell Davies’s landmark opera Taverner.

NMC's catalogue currently consists of around 160 titles, released to widespread critical acclaim: this includes Gramophone Awards for Robin Holloway's Second Concerto for Orchestra (1994), for NMC's first venture into opera – the world premiere recording of The Mask of Orpheus by Sir Harrison Birtwistle (1998) – for Jonathan Harvey’s Body Mandala (2008) and most recently, The NMC Songbook (2009). Numerous releases have also been short-listed for awards. Composers represented on the label range from established voices – James Dillon, Alexander Goehr, Howard Skempton, Mark-Anthony Turnage and Judith Weir – to a younger generation including Joe Cutler, Sadie Harrison and Donnacha Dennehy. NMC's range of artists likewise covers both those long established in the field of new music – such as the BBC Symphony Orchestra, the London Sinfonietta or the Nash Ensemble – and newer voices such as vocal ensemble EXAUDI, The Opera Group and Foden’s Richardson Brass Band.

While NMC's guiding principle has always been the recording of music by living British composers, the Archive Series was established in 1996 to release earlier recordings of historic interest – such as Britten's Les Illuminations and Sinfonia da Requiem recorded in 1941. It was in this series that NMC released Anthony Payne's 'elaboration' of Elgar's Symphony No.3, left in sketch form on the composer's death in 1934, along with a companion recording of the sketches themselves accompanied by a commentary by Anthony Payne. Nominated for Gramophone's Orchestral Award, Elgar/Payne's Symphony No.3 has become NMC's best-selling recording. Additions to the Archive series include Remembering Tippett – featuring premiere 1940s recordings of Tippett's music, released to mark the composer's centenary in 2005 – Britten on Film, featuring his scores for the GPO Film Unit’s Night Mail and Coal Face, and The Aeolian Company: British Music for Pianola by composers including Parry, Howells and Bax.

NMC’s policy has always been one of non-deletion: with that in mind, 2003 saw the launch of Ancora, a major mid-price series of British contemporary recordings reissued from labels including Collins Classics and Unicorn-Kanchana, and supported by Arts Council England. The series has drawn praise from many quarters; the BBC Music Magazine wrote that "NMC's Ancora series… is to be welcomed without reservation." Featuring works by composers including John Casken, Alexander Goehr, Thea Musgrave, Nigel Osborne, Nicholas Maw, Judith Weir, and Harrison Birtwistle, the series is nearing its 25th release.
