PENDERECKI Fonogrammi; Horn Concerto; Partita; The Awakening Of Jacob; Anaklasis
Naxos 8.572482 [CD]

Each of these six orchestral works bears the imprint of Penderecki’s greatness as a composer. Fonogrammi alternates piquant sonorities, pulsating vehemence and moments of great intimacy. Intensity accompanied by neo-Romantic elements can be heard in The Awakening of Jacob whilst Anaklasis is a stunning example of juxtaposed, multiple sound patterns. De natura sonoris I explores more improvisational, jazz-influenced areas, as does the richly orchestrated Partita. The Horn Concerto, composed in 2008, offers an evocative landscape, glacial, powerful, yet wistful.

About the composer, Krzysztof Penderecki
Arguably Poland’s greatest living composer, the 79-year old Krzysztof Penderecki has been rewarded with a string of awards and widespread recognition of his remarkable creativity over the years: from his Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima that attracted immediate international attention in 1960, to the 2001 GRAMMY® award for best choral performance of his Credo, to last year’s team-up with the Radiohead guitarist, Jonny Greenwood, on a joint album that not only reflects the rock star’s respect for Penderecki’s music, but also its boundary-breaking magnetism.

About the conductor, Antoni Wit
Antoni Wit, a leading expert in Polish classical music, has received six previous GRAMMY® nominations for his recordings of music by Polish composers. He has made over 200 records and is a recipient of prestigious awards such as Cannes Classical Award, Classical Internet Award, Grand Prix du Disque de la Nouvelle Académie du Disque and the Karol Szymanowski Foundation.
