Marin Alsop becomes first woman to conduct the BBC’s Last Night of the Proms

May 3, 2013

Marin Alsop

The largest music festival in the world has been going strong for well over a century, introducing a huge variety of classical works to people around the globe in biblical numbers, but the BBC’s Promenade Concerts have never stuck their neck out to appoint a woman conductor for their iconic Last Night of the Proms. That line in the sand has now been crossed with the news that Marin Alsop, music director of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra and principal conductor of the São Paolo Symphony Orchestra, will create history by stepping up to the podium on September 7.

Ms Alsop is no stranger to followers of Naxos; she has already notched up more than 40 discs with the label. September’s release of her recording of Brahms’ A German Requiem with the Leipzig MDR Radio Symphony and Chorus comes a few days after her other Proms concert on August 17, which programmes the same work. Another of her new Naxos releases follows in October, featuring Prokofiev’s Symphony No 4 and The Prodigal Son performed by the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra.

This year’s Last Night of the Proms also spotlights mezzo soprano Joyce DiDonato in a selection of short numbers that includes an aria from Rossini’s La donna del lago. DiDonato can be heard in the title rôle of Rossini’s La Cenerentola (8.660191–92), recorded on Naxos as part of its ongoing project to record his complete operas.
