David Tennant reads on Shakespeare AudioBook

May 24, 2009

Doctor Who star and the RSC’s most recent Hamlet, David Tennant, has lent his voice to Naxos AudioBooks’ new collection of Shakespearean sonnets.

From Shakespeare—with Love: The Best of the Sonnets was published in April as an audiobook to tie in with the 400th anniversary of the sonnets’ first full publication.

Tennant reads eight sonnets at the beginning and end of the recording, including “Shall I compare thee to a summer’s day?”.

Director David Timson said: “I assembled a group of actors whose approach to the sonnets is as varied as their ages and dialects…It was great that David Tennant had a break in his busy schedule to come into the studio to record…It is a joy that an actor who has made his name in the popular field of television is so willing and able to adapt his talents so skilfully for classical work.”

Other actors reading the sonnets include actors Juliet Stevenson, Anton Lesser and Maxine Peake.

From Shakespeare—With Love (The Best of Sonnets)

William Shakespeare’s ‘sugared sonnets’ circulated privately amongst his friends and colleagues for many years, but the public had to wait until their publication in 1609 to enjoy these masterpieces on every aspect of love. Whether it’s fidelity, obsession, jealousy or the love of friends, Shakespeare seems to know about it all. To celebrate the 400th anniversary of their publication, a rich variety of actors have been brought together to show the many different ways in which these sonnets can be interpreted.
