Naxos Releases opera DVDs – Cyrano de Bergerac starring Plácido Domingo, and Benvenuto Cellini conducted by Valery Gergiev

November 12, 2009

In November 2009, Naxos releases two outstanding opera DVDs, each a swashbuckling adventure, one about a lovelorn poet, the other about a passionate sculptor:

ALFANO Cyrano de Bergerac
(Palau de les Arts “Reina Sofia”, 2007)

When Plácido Domingo and Sondra Radvanovsky sang Cyrano and Roxane at New York’s Metropolitan Opera, Andante magazine wrote: ‘Incredibly, Cyrano is his 121st role. And it suits him splendidly…Soprano Sondra Radvanovsky was luminous as Roxane, her passionate outbursts showing off her powerful upper register to good effect’.

BERLIOZ Benvenuto Cellini
(Salzburg Festival, 2007)

‘A mix of futurism à la Metropolis, fantasy à la Batman and quotes from Piranesi’s Carceri, juxtaposed in the form of photo montages, enhanced with…robots, a helicopter, a shark and the winged vehicle of a pop star Pope’, was how the Neue Zürcher Zeitung described this astonishing Salzburg Festival production of Berlioz’s Benvenuto Cellini conducted by Valery Gergiev.

Coming in December 2009 on Naxos

DONIZETTI Maria Stuarda
(Sferisterio Opera Festival, 2007)

8.660261–62 (2 CD)

‘Maria Pia Piscitelli, in the title role, turns in a knock-out performance.’ (Classical Net on the DVD)
