Luis de Freitas Branco Violin and Piano Works Recorded for Naxos

April 22, 2010

On 15 December 2009 and 25 January 2010 in Namouche Studios, Lisboa, Portugal, Carlos Damas (violin) and Anna Tomasik (piano) recorded Freitas Branco’s Violin Sonatas Nos. 1 & 2 and Prélude for violin and piano, to be issued on Naxos 8.572334. João Pedro Castro was the recording engineer.

Here are some photos taken at those recording sessions:

Naxos has also released highly praised recordings of the Portuguese composer’s orchestral music:

BRANCO Orchestral Works Vol 1
Symphony No 1, Scherzo fantasique, Suite alentejana No 1
Ireland RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
Álvaro Cassuto, conductor

‘Álvaro Cassuto is Portugal’s finest living conductor and an authority on the classical music of his country. Many will remember his magnificent recordings for Marco Polo (8.223879, 8.225087, 8.225216, 8.225186, 8.225233 and 8.225271) featuring the symphonic works of another Portuguese composer, Joly Braga Santos (1924–1988), who was a student of Freitas Branco. Obviously Cassuto hasn’t lost his touch, because the performances here are just as accomplished. Granted the orchestra is not Portuguese as on some of his previous discs, but you’ll find the playing of the RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra of Ireland is equally good and totally committed.’

BRANCO Orchestral Works Vol 2
Symphony No 2, After a Reading of Guerra Junqueiro, Artificial Paradises
Ireland RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra
Álvaro Cassuto, conductor

‘Cassuto, an expert in his native repertoire, conducts fine and nuanced readings of these works, while the Irish musicians are recorded cleanly…A top recommendation.’

‘The RTÉ Orchestra does a nice clean job, and the sound is very good. I am eager to hear more from Luis de Freitas Branco.’
American Record Guide

‘As in previous issues in this series, Álvaro Cassuto is the ideal exponent of his countryman’s music, and the sound that Naxos gets in Dublin remains some of the finest on offer from this label. Excellent on all fronts!’
