The São Paulo Symphony Orchestra triumphs at the 25th Brazilian Music Awards

May 15, 2014

With three of its recordings competing in the finals for the Best Classical Music Album award, the São Paulo Symphony Orchestra [Orquestra Sinfônica do Estado de São Paulo (OSESP)] was unanimously declared the winner at the 25th Brazilian Music Awards, held on 14 May at the Municipal Theatre in Rio de Janeiro.

The disc that took the title featured music by Heitor Villa-Lobos: his Symphony No. 6—On the Outline of the Mountains of Brazil, and Symphony No. 7, performed by the OSESP and conducted by Isaac Karabtchevsky. The recording, released in September 2012, is the first of six volumes in a project to record the 11 symphonies by Heitor Villa-Lobos for Naxos, undertaken in tandem with a musicological review of the works, and leading to a new critical edition of the symphonies. This has been organised by the orchestra’s publishing house, Criadores do Brasil, under the supervision of Isaac Karabtchevsky and in association with the Academia Brasileira de Música. Disseminating the works of Villa-Lobos, whose symphonies are still rarely performed, is one of the OSESP’s most significant undertakings.
