2017 ICMA – International Classical Music Awards – announced

November 17, 2016

Six discs from the Naxos label are among the recently announced nominations for the 2017 International Classical Music Awards (ICMA).

The Naxos discs appear in four categories. In the Early Music section is the first CD recording of a unique 15th-century Burgundian songbook, the Chansonnier Cordiforme, performed by Ensemble Leones under the distinguished direction of Marc Lewon, whose expertise continues to be defined by his musicological scholarship and many years of concert activity. (8.573325).

This is the Ensemble Leones’ third album to be nominated for an ICMA award. Their recording Argentum et Aurum, Musical Treasures from the Early Habsburg Renaissance, earned the performers a 2016 ICMA award, an achievement which we’re confidently expecting them to repeat!

A Naxos American Classics recording is nominated in the Contemporary Music category and features two compelling orchestral works by living composers, John Corigliano Jnr and Michael Torke. It’s also the first recording for Naxos by the National Orchestral Institute Philharmonic, composed of elite conservatory students from across the United States and abroad and conducted by David Alan Miller. (8.559782)

In the Concerto category comes a disc of two violin concertos (Édouard Lalo, Joan Manén) performed by Naxos star artist Tianwa Yang and the Barcelona Symphony and Catalonia National Orchestra, conducted by Darrell Ang. Released only last month, this album already has a Pizzicato Supersonic award and, as this is Tianwa’s fourth ICMA nomination, she is a favourite to clinch the award this time round. (8.573067)

The second nomination in this category is a recording of four Polish works for solo violin and orchestra featuring violinist Piotr Plawner, prophetically described by Sir Yehudi Menuhin as a performer with “phenomenal ability.” (8.573496)

Leif Segerstam’s recording of Sibelius’ Scaramouche, one of the composer’s significant scores for the ballet, is nominated in the Symphonic Music section. Segerstam is an acclaimed Sibelius interpreter, and this disc was the final volume in our 6-CD series of Sibelius’ orchestral music performed by Segerstam and the platinum record-making and award-winning Turku Philharmonic. (8.573511) The previous volume in the Segerstam-Turku Philharmonic series, that of Sibelius’ music for the stage featuring Belshazzar’s Feast, was nominated for an award last year. (8.573300)

Finally, also in the Symphonic Music category, comes the music of Ravel. It’s the third volume in Leonard Slatkin’s ongoing survey of his orchestral works with the Orchestre National de Lyon, this particular volume featuring Ravel’s orchestrations of works by other composers. (8.573124)

A further six nominations were received by releases from our affiliated labels, as follows: Ondine (Chamber Music, Choral); Orfeo (Chamber Music); SWR (Best Collection); and Grand Piano (Contemporary, 2 nominations). The Grand Piano nominations are for two releases in the same series: Nicolas Horvath’s survey of the complete piano music by Philip Glass.

Numerous releases from Naxos’ distributed labels are also among the nominations; these are included in the comprehensive list shown below.

The ICMA nominations recognise creativity, imagination in choice of repertoire and artistic excellence. The final results announcing the ICMA winners will be published on 20 January, 2017, and we wish all artists, musicians, producers and everyone involved in creating these recordings the best of luck!
