Michael Daugherty

Zuill Bailey

The 59th annual GRAMMY® Awards, announced on 12 February, include three awards for Naxos’ September 2016 release of music by Michael Daugherty (8.559798). The recording features a trio of works by the American composer: Tales of Hemingway, American Gothic and Once Upon a Castle. The disc took the award for Best Classical Compendium, while Tales of Hemingway (for cello and orchestra) won the Best Contemporary Classical Composition category, with cellist Zuill Bailey’s performance taking the award for Best Classical Instrumental Solo.

DAUGHERTY Tales of Hemingway, American Gothic, Once Upon A Castle

Naxos 8.559798 [CD]

There was something of history repeating itself, since the Naxos recording of Daugherty’s Metropolis Symphony (8.559635), which similarly features the Nashville Symphony and conductor Giancarlo Guerrero, also won 3 GRAMMYs® in the 2011 Awards. Both discs reflect the notable reputation and success of the Naxos American Classics Series.

Giancarlo Guerrero

Daugherty studied composition with many of the preeminent composers of the 20th century, including Jacob Druckman, Earle Brown and Roger Reynolds at Yale, Pierre Boulez at IRCAM in Paris, and György Ligeti in Hamburg. In 1991, Daugherty joined the University of Michigan School of Music, Theatre and Dance as Professor of Composition, where he is a mentor to many of today’s most talented young composers.

Congratulations go to all those involved in the performance and production of this latest award-winning disc from Naxos.
