Raymond Bisha introduces a recording of orchestral works by Alberto Nepomuceno (1864-1920), a herald of Brazilian musical nationalism. It’s the first release in a significant new Naxos series titled The Music of Brazil. This is a monumental, 5-year undertaking in collaboration with Brazil’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs to produce around 30 releases of some 100 works by Brazilian composers, mainly of orchestral repertoire. The Minas Gerais Philharmonic Orchestra under Fabio Mechetti perform three of Nepomuceno’s colourful and highly individual works for this curtain-raiser to the project: the Prelude to his uncompleted opera O Garantuja, one if his best-known works; the vivacious suite Série Brasileira; and his Symphony in G minor, one of the earliest Brazilian examples of the genre that reveals the influence of Brahms.
