In the Studio: Septura prepares a Christmas treat

August 13, 2019

Christmas is a-coming,
Septura’s thought of that.
They’ve chosen their next programme
For their usual format.

It’s brass septet and ballet;
Does Tchaikovsky work for you?
They’ve made your stocking filler with a
Nutcracker review.

Septura, the acclaimed British brass septet, has already recorded seven highly successful volumes of transcriptions for Naxos. They recently completed the recording session for their eighth at St Jude’s Church in London’s Hampstead Garden Suburb. It’s a re-imagining for brass septet of the orchestral suite from Tchaikovsky’s beloved Christmas ballet Nutcracker. The magical musical journey of Clara and the Nutcracker is enhanced on this November release with narration by the English actor and stage director Derek Jacobi; the text is based on an adaptation by Alexandre Dumas of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King.

Huw Morgan (trumpet in E flat), Alan Thomas & Simon Cox (trumpets in B flat)
Matthew Gee & Matthew Knight (trombones), Daniel West (bass trombone), Peter Smith (tuba)

The latest album is scheduled for release in November.

This fifth volume is one of the strongest, filled with songs and orchestral pieces that one would not immediately associate with a brass ensemble, and the fun is in seeing how the arrangers do it.
