Alessandro Marangoni Records and Performs Rossini’s Complete Piano Music

December 5, 2008

Naxos has engaged Alessandro Marangoni to record Rossini’s complete piano music. This project, which will result in some fifteen CDs, the first of which has already been issued this year, will occupy the young Italian pianist for the next seven years. Concurrently, Marangoni is taking this Rossini program on tour with the musicologist, playright and actor Quirino Principe; Marangoni’s concert interpretations will be interspersed with critical responses to Rossini’s music and readings from Rossini’s own writings.

- Musica, November 2008

The first volume of Marangoni’s Rossini Complete Piano Music series, Péchés de vieillesse Vols 7 (Album de chaumière) and excerpts from Vol 9 (Naxos 8.570590-91), has already gained critical acclaim:

“Marangoni is not yet 30 years old, but seems to have a very good feel for Rossini. He has a beautiful legato touch and a keen sense of phrasing-both qualities absolutely essential for this music. I'll look forward to future installments.” (American Record Guide)

“Naxos and the distinguished, award-winner pianist Alessandro Marangoni, deserve to be congratulated for the decision to record the complete Péchés. This CD set is the first of the intended series, entitled ‘Rossini’s Complete Piano Music’. The present set occupies two CDs and each is a delight from beginning to end… This CD set is undoubtedly an excellent recording of Rossini’s often neglected but wonderful piano music, finally being given the attention it deserves. I can hardly wait for the next volume in the series to be available.” (MusicWeb International)

“This is going to turn into another of Naxos’s eminently collectable sets, and on this showing will prove to be worth it at almost any price.” (MusicWeb International)

The second volume of Rossini’s Péchés de vieillesse, which presents Volume VI, Album for Smart Children, includes diverse movements whose titles, whether ironic or deeply sincere, reflect their stylistic range. The eleventh (Étude asthmatique) will be included in a future album. The disc is scheduled for release in January 2009 on Naxos 8.570766.
