Mariya Kim Records Schumann Piano Works for Naxos
April 8, 2010
Between 10–12 December 2009 in Wyastone Concert Hall, UK, Mariya Kim recorded Schumann’s Humoresque Op 20, 6 Etudes after Paganini Op. 3 and 6 Etudes after Paganini Op. 10 for release on Naxos 8.572374. Michael Ponder was the Producer.
Mariya Kim reports: ‘Naxos offered me some different projects for the recording and I decided to choose the Schumann project because I found it most interesting for me. Schumann is one of my favourite composers. The Etudes after Paganini are very different and exciting, also they are not very often played and the Humoresque is one of the most beautiful and outstanding pieces by Robert Schumann. So, I think this program will be interesting for the listeners.
‘The recording went very well. It was a very exciting and busy time. The producer of the CD, Michael Ponder, and I worked in the very beautiful Wyastone Hall in Monmouth. I enjoyed it very much and I think we were a “good team”. I felt very comfortable and happy. I can also say that I am really impressed with a beauty of the Monmouth area.’
‘Mariya Kim is a young prize-winning pianist from the Ukraine. She is, in fact, Russian with a Korean grandfather. She has won many competitions, however winning the Seoul Piano Competition gave her this Naxos recording of piano works by Schumann that are not in the Naxos catalogue. This will be a very attractive CD, played with great virtuosity by this young agile pianist.’ – Michael Ponder
