Gramophone nomination for Paul Hillier and ARS NOVA Copenhagen

September 14, 2010

Gramophone has announced that a CD with the Danish vocal ensemble ARS NOVA Copenhagen and its conductor Paul Hillier has been nominated for the prestigious Gramophone Award 2010.

Choir and conductor have been nominated in the category “Baroque Vocal” for the second release in a series of the early Baroque master Heinrich Schütz’s narrative works. The critically acclaimed CD that has received the nomination features Schütz’s Christmas Oratorio and The Resurrection. The CD has been released by the Danish national recording label Dacapo.

The nominated CD has already aroused great attention from classical music reviewers all over the world. Besides the conductor’s interpretation and the choir’s performance, the enthusiastic critics have noted the brilliant soloist performances offered by among others the tenor Adam Riis in the role of the Evangelist, the bass Jakob Bloch-Jespersen as Jesus and Else Torp as an Angel.

Conductor Paul Hillier says: “Musically, this project has been a very fine experience—and I am happy to say that the results have been very warmly received. Schütz is a familiar enough name, and yet he can be a hard “sell”. Perhaps this is because his music is somewhat inward looking—or gives the impression of being—and somehow he is, I feel, a neglected master. But I come away from each of these recordings for Dacapo with renewed admiration of his music. I am sincerely pleased that our CD has now been nominated for a Gramophone Award.”

Excellent Reviews

Fine reviews have flooded in for ARS NOVA’s and Paul Hillier’s Schütz series, especially the release that has now been nominated for a Gramophone Award. In his review of Hillier’s and ARS NOVA’s CD.

Gramophone’s reviewer said earlier in the year: “Ars Nova Copenhagen reaffirms its status as an outstanding vocal ensemble with luminous and pure choral singing.”

And the BBC Music Magazine, which has also given top marks to the nominated CD, says: “The performance is first-rate throughout. Natural, tractable voices create characterful images”.

The French music magazine Diapason, with its top rating of 5, is among the ranks of periodicals that single out the Danish CD release; here for example with the words “Superbement dramatique!”.

The Gramophone Awards are to be presented at a ceremony on 1 October 2010. The fourth and last release in ARS NOVA Copenhagen’s and Paul Hillier’s Schütz series will appear in February 2011.
