Naxos Releases Final Volume of Acclaimed Schubert String Quartet Cycle by Kodály Quartet June 21st

On June 21st, Naxos will release Volume 6 of the Kodály String Quartet’s complete cycle of the quartets of Franz Schubert (8557125). The latest and final release in the series is comprised of String Quartet No.15 in G major, D. 887, Opus 161 along with the early Five German Dances with Seven Trios and a Coda, D. 90.

The now-complete Schubert cycle joins the Kodály’s previously released complete sets of the entire string quartets of Haydn and Beethoven on Naxos, both of which received outstanding reviews for the Hungarian ensemble’s intelligent and stylistic interpretations.

Of an earlier volume in the set, Gramophone named it Editors’ Choice for the "good down-to-earth chamber music-making by a quartet who have worked together for the past 30 years" and wrote that the "notably well-balanced group bring an elegant and expressive warmth" to these Schubert Quartets. Classic CD named the Kodály’s Haydn Op. 64 as "Best Chamber Music Release" of 1993.

The Kodály Quartet, formed in 1966, made its American debut in 1982 and returns to North American this fall for a concert tour including appearances in Ottawa, Montreal, Providence (RI), Jacksonville and Daytona Beach, FL, and Chester, CT. Repertoire for this tour includes Beethoven’s Quartet in F minor, Op. 95, Dohnanyi’s Second Quartet and Ravel’s Quartet in G. The Hungarian ensemble has been featured on major concert series at the 92nd Street Y, the Library of Congress, Spivey Hall, Music Toronto, and other prestigious venues.

Next on the Kodály’s recording schedule for Naxos are the Octets of Mendelssohn and Bruch (the German composer’s last work from 1920, which was only published/premiered in 1996), set for release in June, 2006.
