The city of Arad is a historical center of Romania, with a remarkable and consistent musical tradition. The year 1833 witnessed the establishment of the music academy, a proper background for the development of a necessary musical culture. The sporadic nature of the cultural events during the first half of the 19th century gradually gave way to a permanent musical scene. Numerous prestigious European figures appeared in the musical life of Arad: Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauß, and Anton Rubinstein, Pablo Sarasate in the 19th century and Pablo Casals, George Enescu, Béla Bartók and others in the 20th century. 1890 saw the establishment of the Philharmonic Society, organisation for concerts, including both an orchestra and a choir with ambitious and sophisticated schedules. Thus Arad was included all of the important European events. In 1913 the building of the “Cultural Palace Hall” was completed.

Since 1973 the symphonic orchestra has given concerts in Austria, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Hungary, Italy and Spain.
