Formed in 1990, the Archaeus Quartet has performed throughout the United Kingdom, and at the Wigmore Hall and Purcell Room in London. The group has appeared at the Warwick, Greenwich, King’s Lynn and Woburn Festivals as well as broadcasting live for Classic FM. The quartet has coached at Dartington International Summer School for several years, and has run its own chamber music course in the Channel Islands. From 1999 until 2005 the quartet was a resident group at The Space Arts Centre in Docklands, London. It has performed the complete cycle of Beethoven’s String Quartets in a series of six concerts three times: Oxford and Cumbria in 1998, and London in 1999. Several composers have written works specifically for the group, including Antonin Tucapsky, Jeffrey Joseph, Jenni Roditi and Leonard Salzedo. Their recordings include the Quartet by Minna Keal, and quartets by Ethel Smyth, Amy Beach, Susan Spain-Dunk, Leonard Salzedo and Cyril Scott. The Archaeus has collaborated with many esteemed musicians, including Thea King, Timothy Lines, Ruggiero Ricci, Philip Fowke and several fellow cellists and viola players.
