Asal Malekzadeh was born in Tehran in 1987. She started to follow her dream of becoming a musician in 1998, under the supervision of great instructors from all around the world.
A professional Daf player, she is also a university lecturer, teaching at top Iranian universities. With 20 years of experience as a percussionist, she has achieved vast and varied teaching experience: from drums and percussion camps, to teaching and playing Iranian and Arabic rhythms in different variations on Daf and Cajon, and at several popular workshops.
Asal Malekzadeh also performs as a Daf soloist and is the founder and manager of the Sarmast Perussion Group, which consists of 90 female Daf players, based In Tehran.
In 2019 Asal Malekzadeh was invited to be a part of the En cajornate Festival in Spain, teaching and playing Arabic rhythms. She has received numerous prizes, including the First Prize for her solo performance at the Daf Navazi festival in Kermanshah, Iran in 2007, and First Prize for her solo performance at the Avaye Mehr festival, Iran in 2009. Asal Malekzadeh has worked with a countless number of well-known international percussionists, and she is proficient in various percussive techniques and styles including Konnakol, the south Indian rhythmic system; Cajon; congas and bongos; and timbales.
