BOCHUM SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Founded in 1919, the Bochum Symphony Orchestra (BSO) has developed into one of the leading orchestras in western Germany. Under several general music directors and with avant-garde programmes, it developed a wide reputation as an innovative orchestra. Composers such as Paul Hindemith, Ernst Krenek and Erwin Schulhoff performed their own works with the Orchestra.

In 1994, the Israeli-American conductor Steven Sloane became general music director. Since then he has succeeded in raising the local, regional and international profile of the Orchestra which has been at the heart of two regional celebrations of the arts in the Ruhr: the Ruhrtriennale, and the European Capital of Culture which, in 2010, was assigned to the Ruhr region. Sloane and the BSO have performed throughout Germany, Europe, Israel and the United States, and in 2016 the Orchestra took residence in its new permanent home, the Anneliese Brost Musikforum Ruhr.
