Gaudeamus was founded in 1996 by the conductor Alexander Vacek, with members drawn from the universities and secondary schools of Brno and from foreign students studying there. From 1998 to 2003 Gaudeamus was an official choir of Masaryk University in Brno, appearing to mark several academic celebrations of Masaryk University, regularly opening the University Ball and giving concerts on the Dies Academicus. It has appeared in choral festivals and competitions, including the 25th Oratorio Festival “Musique en Morvan” in Autun, France (2000), the Fourth International Festival of Academic Choirs “Universitas cantat” in Poznan, Poland (2001), the Cäcilia Chortage in Lindenholzhausen, Germany (2001; Golden diploma in the category of mixed choirs), the Twentieth Festival of Choral Singing in Berlin, Germany (2003) and the Fourteenth International Festival of Advent and Christmas Music with Petr Eben’s Prize in Prague (2004). The choir won two first prizes and three special prizes at the Seventeenth International Festival of Academic Choirs in Pardubice (IFAS) in 2002. The choir now has 45 members, with Štěpán Policer as chorus-master.
