Australian-born bass-baritone Derek Welton has been a soloist at the Deutsche Oper Berlin since 2015. Highlights include Prus (The Makropulos Case), Forester (The Cunning Little Vixen), Mr Flint (Billy Budd), Saint- Bris (Les Huguenots), Peter (Hänsel und Gretel), and Klingsor (Parsifal). Guest engagements have included Klingsor (Bayerische Staatsoper), Reimann’s Lear (Salzburg Festival), Höller’s Der Meister und Margarita and Escamillo (Carmen, Hamburgische Staatsoper), and Mozart’s Le nozze di Figaro (Glyndebourne).
One of the most promising Wagner interpreters of his generation, Welton has appeared at Opera North (Donner in Das Rheingold), the Beijing Music Festival (Klingsor), and the Semperoper Dresden (Herald in Lohengrin). These successes led to his debut as Wotan (Das Rheingold) at the Deutsche Oper Berlin, and his debut at the Bayreuth Festival as Klingsor.
Welton has performed in concerts worldwide, with highlights including Martinů’s Epic of Gilgamesh with the Czech Philharmonic, Handel’s Messiah with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Bach’s St Matthew Passion with the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra and Bruckner’s Mass in F minor at the BBC Proms.
