Ella Kiang studied under Professor Jan Hu in Hong Kong, and later at the Academia di Santa Cecilia in Italy with Antonietta Ruffini, Giorgio Favaretto and Riccardo Zama. While she was at the Academy she made her début at the Teatro Eliseo in Rome where she performed “Madama Butterfly”. After completing her studies, she continued to take concert engagements in Italy.
In Hong Kong, Ella Kiang has appeared regularly on radio and television, in recitals and in operas. She has performed La Bohème, Faust, Cavalleria Rusticana, Norma, Tosca, Lady Macbeth, L’Elisir d’Amore and La Traiata. She was invited to Australia and New Zealand several times to perform operas, such as Madama Butterfly, Mikado and La Voix Humaine with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra and the New Zealand Opera Company. She appeared as Madama Butterfly in the Australian Broadcasting Commission’s televised version of the opera to much acclaim, and sang the title role again in the 1977 Hong Kong production. She has given recitals in the major cities of Australia and New Zealand as well as in London, Honolulu, Manila, Singapore and Malaysia.
Apart from maintaining a busy performing schedule, Kiang also taught at the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts.
