Enrico Calesso was born in Treviso and studied the piano with Anna Colonna Romano at the Venice Conservatory. He also studied philosophy at Venice University, graduating with distinction in 1998. From 2000 to 2005 he was a member of Uroš Lajovic’s conducting class at Vienna University, once again graduating with distinction. During this period he was a music assistant at the Bregenz Festival and the Vienna Festival. He also gained valuable experience as assistant to Ulf Schirmer. From 2007 to 2010 he worked as conductor and assistant to the music director of the Theater Erfurt. From 2008 to 2011 he was the music director of the Klosterneuburg Opera Festival. In 2010 he was appointed principal conductor of the Mainfranken Theater, Würzburg, assuming the position of general music director in the following year. Enrico Calesso has conducted orchestras including the Vienna Symphony, the Vienna Radio Symphony, the Berne Symphony, the Rostock North German Philharmonic, the North West German Philharmonic, the Orchestre Symphonique de Mulhouse, the Schwerin Mecklenburg Staatskapelle, the Erfurt Philharmonic, the Orchestra Filarmonia Veneta and the Rzeszów Philharmonic. He conducted Giordano’s Andrea Chénier at the 2011 and 2012 Bregenz Festivals and Verdi’s Macbeth at the Stadttheater, Berne in 2013. In 2016 he will make his début at the Teatro La Fenice.
