Eugenio Tobalina was born in Bilbao, and studied there at the Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga Conservatory. David Russell and Leo Brouwer have been of paramount importance for his professional career. Throughout his whole career he has always been highly interested in contemporary music and those less frequent pieces of music composed for guitar in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. His career covers not only performances such as solo recitals, concerts for guitar and orchestra, recitals with singers, chamber music and electronic music, but first performances for both unknown repertoire and pieces written for and dedicated to him.
As a solo player he has performed with the Bilbao Symphony Orchestra, the Córdoba Symphony Orchestra, the Basque Country Symphony Orchestra, and the Pablo Sarasate Symphony Orchestra from Pamplona. He founded the Synaulia Trio (flute, viola and guitar) and has collaborated with numerous chamber ensembles. He has also accompanied singers. Eugenio Tobalina has played in the most prestigious festivals and concert halls throughout Spain. Abroad he has played in Chile, Venezuela, Germany, France, Italy, Poland, Hungary and Taiwan. He has given the premières of music by numerous composers, including Valentín Ruiz, Ramón Lazkano, Joseba Torre, Antón Larrauri, Manuel Seco de Arpe, Carlos Villasol, Antonio Lauzurika, Zuriñe F. Gerenabarrena, José Mª Sánchez Verdú, Gabriel Erkoreka, Jesús Torres, Sabin Salaberri, Sergio Gutiérrez, David del Puerto and Alfonso García de la Torre. He has recorded Hizpide with the Synaulia Trio, and has collaborated in commercial recordings with Coro Universitario del País Vasco, LIM and AIREAN, with broadcasts and television appearances in Spain and abroad. He has published editions of various works for guitar and teaches guitar at the Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga Music Conservatory in Bilbao.
