Born in Rio de Janeiro, Fernando Portari had his first vocal lessons with his father. He also studied the piano with Zinaide Liggiero and drama with Antonio Mercado. In 1991 he won the Lina Kubala Competition and a scholarship offered by the Karlsruhe Musikhochschule in Germany, where he studied with the Brazilian tenor Aldo Baldin. He made his Italian début as Jaquino in Fidelio at the Teatro La Fenice in Venice, where, in 1999, he returned to sing Riccardo in Donizetti’s Maria de Rohan. In 2000 he sang in La rondine at the Teatro dell’Opera in Rome and in Rossini’s Stabat Mater in Florence. He has taken part in several operatic productions in São Paulo and also performed Condor by Carlos Gomes at the Manaus Opera Festival. Subsequent seasons have seen him appearing as Des Grieux in Massenet’s Manon at the Staatsoper Unter den Linden in Berlin, and singing in La rondine at La Fenice, Anna Bolena and Gianni Schicchi at the Teatro Massimo in Palermo and La traviata at the Staatsoper in Hamburg. Professor of the Faculty of Music of the University Ribeirão Preto, he has recorded the complete works for voice and piano of Gilberto Mendes, with the pianist Rubens Ricciardi, and has won several prizes, including that of Best Opera Singer of the Year (APCA) and the Carlos Gomes Prize.
