Born in 1971 in Belgium, Ivan Meylemans studied trombone, percussion and piano at the Lemmens Institute of Leuven (Louvain) and the conservatory of Ghent. Since his professional trombone début in 1987, Meylemans has rapidly established himself as a charismatic instrumentalist. After only five years of study, he became principal trombonist of the Flemish Radio Orchestra & Choir, in 1992.

As a soloist he has won many national and international awards and played with the most renowned orchestras around the world, most notably the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam, where he was principal trombonist from 1994 until 2007. In 1996, Ivan Meylemans started orchestral conducting studies at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague, where his teachers were Ed Spanjaard and Jac van Steen. Since he graduated in 2000 with summa cum laude, Meylemans’ career as a conductor has surpassed his career as an instrumentalist. He took part in numerous national and international conducting competitions. In 2001, he participated in the World Music Competition in Kerkrade (the Netherlands), the 47th Concours International de Jeunes Chefs d’Orchestre in Besançon (France) and the International Concours of the Orchestra “Radio France” in Paris. In September 2002, Meylemans won the Second International Vakhtang Jordania conducting competition in Kharkov (Ukraine) and only two weeks later, became the finalist and third laureate of the renowned Donatella Flick Conducting Competition in London, where he conducted the London Symphony Orchestra. This performance was very well received by the music critics in London, who unanimously considered him their choice as winner of the competition.
