John Mills studied at the Royal College of Music as a scholar under Rodney Friend. He is highly in demand as an orchestral leader of groups including the John Wilson Orchestra, English Chamber Orchestra, BBC Concert Orchestra, London Mozart Players, Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and the RTÉ Concert Orchestra, among others. He regularly leads the ECO with recent tours including of the United States and Russia. For twelve years John Mills has been the leader of the highly acclaimed Tippett Quartet, performing, and broadcasting widely across the United Kingdom and worldwide.
He has recorded extensively, releasing twenty discs for labels including Naxos. John Mills has a fine reputation as a soloist, including appearances with the English Chamber Orchestra, performing with Maxim Vengerov and Stephanie Gonley around Britain and abroad. He plays a c.1735 violin by Januarius Gagliano.
