MARCELL BAKONYI

Born in Hungary, the bass Marcell Bakonyi studied at the Leó Weiner Conservatory in Budapest and at the Stuttgart Musikhochschule. He took his singing diploma at the Zürich Opera Studio and, in 2009 at the Salzburg Landestheater.

He sang with the Schloss Rheinsberg Chamber Opera in 2003 and received an award from the Richard Wagner Association in 2004. In 2011 he won first prize in the Rolando Nicolosi Competition in Rome.

He made his début at the Pesaro Rossini Opera Festival in 2007 as Lord Sidney in Il viaggio a Reims and sang Varo in Handel’s Ezio in 2010 at the SWR Schwetzinger Festival in addition to Figaro and Leporello at the Salzburg Landestheater. Other performances have ranged from Antinoo in Monteverdi’s Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria in Oslo to rôles in Janáček’s From the House of the Dead and Rameau’s Les Indes galantes in Nuremberg.
