Born in Malaga into a family of pianists, Marco Socías had his early musical education there, followed by further study at the Cologne Musikhochschule. His teachers have included Carmen Gallardo, Antonio Company, José Tomás, José Miguel Moreno, Hubert Käppel and David Russell. He was appointed professor at the early age of 21, the youngest in Spain. He has won awards at various guitar competitions, including the Infanta Cristina (Fundación Guerrero, Madrid), in which he was awarded first prize, Le Printemps de la Guitare (Belgium) and the Concorso Internazionale di Gargnano (Italy). He appears often at international festivals and as a soloist, with performances throughout Europe, the Near East, Japan, Korea, South America and the United States, and performs with leading orchestras and chamber groups. He won particular praise from Joaquín Rodrigo for his complete 1997 recording of the latterʼs works for guitar, Elogio de la Guitarra. Marco Socías is a professor at the Centro Superior de Música of the Basque Country, “Musikene”, in San Sebastián.
