Musica Aeterna Bratislava was established in 1973 by Professor Ján Albrecht. Since 1989 the ensemble has used original instruments from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, or their copies. Its repertoire embraces European music from the early seventeenth century to the classical period, with a special interest in the performance of rediscovered compositions by Slovak composers, both in the concert hall and in recordings. The artistic director and leader of the ensemble is Peter Zajícek. For a number of years Musica Aeterna has successfully collaborated with the Centre for Baroque Music in Versailles, in addition to work for the Flanders Festival, Holland Festival of Early Music Utrecht, Vienna Classical Festival, Carinthian Summer Festival, Villach, Sopron Early Music Days, International Early Music Festival Prague, Bach Tage Berlin, Swedish Baroque Festival Malmö and the Barockfest Münster, among others. The first tour to the USA in 1996 brought Musica Aeterna invitations for further tours in 1997 and 1998. Conductors and soloists distinguished in the field of early music regularly appear with Musica Aeterna Bratislava and a number of recordings by the ensemble have been awarded prestigious international prizes, including, in 1994 and 1995, the Diapason d’Or for the complete Concerti Grossi of Georg Muffat.
