The Olsztyn State Philharmonic was founded in 1946, evolving from the Olsztyn Symphony Orchestra, which had been founded in 1904, and quite quickly became one of Poland’s finest. Its vocation to perform throughout Europe resulted in its totalling at one time more than one hundred concerts annually, both at home and abroad in Russia, Rumania, Bulgaria, Germany, Spain, Italy, Finland and elsewhere. It participates in major festivals and now extends its activity in France. Boasting a discography that is already considerable—in addition to contemporary French music, it has recorded, amongst others, Mendelssohn and Rachmaninov—, it is scheduled to record Saint-Saëns and Scriabin. It includes various chamber ensembles and a well-known chorus (the Collegium Musicum of Olsztyn), and performs in one of the finest Polish concert halls. Conducted for several years by Krzysztof Dziewiecki, and currently by Piotr Borkowski, it has already collaborated with the greatest Polish conductors, including Henryk Czyż, Jerzy Maksymiuk, Tadeusz Strugała, and Jacek Kasprzyk and soloists, including Witold Małcużyǹski, Konstanty Kulka, Piotr Paleczny, Wanda Wiłkomirska, and others.
