Qilian Chen graduated from Shenyang Music Conservatory with the highest honours and joined the same institution as a singing teacher. In 1986 she moved to Brussels graduating in operatic and concert singing at the Conservatoire Royal with Jules Bastin, serving as his assistant until 1998. She has won prizes in many major international singing competitions, including the Belvedere (Vienna), s-Hertogenbosch (Holland), the Pavarotti Competition, Philadelphia (USA), Spiga d’Oro (Sicily), and the Queen Elisabeth Singing Competition (Belgium). Following her success in the latter she was engaged for several performances at La Monnaie in Brussels, beginning with the title rôles in Madama Butterfly and Turandot. Since then she has sung around 200 times in theatres throughout Europe and the United States. Her repertoire ranges from opera to oratorio, Lieder and French song. Her recordings include Chinese songs and the great Puccini arias.
