Randers Chamber Orchestra was founded in 1945 by Lavard Friisholm, and under his leadership the orchestra soon became a permanent feature of Danish musical life. Friisholm founded regular concert series in Randers and in the numerous local castles, and through regular broadcasts on Danish Radio established the orchestra as one of the leading ensembles of the time. In 1981 he was succeeded by Jesper Grove Jørgensen, and in 1986 the orchestra was designated a "basis ensemble", enlarging its activities and providing a framework for state funding Czech violinist Milan Vitek became the orchestra's chief conductor in 1989, marking the formation of the Danish Sinfonietta, a collaboration between Randers Chamber Orchestra and the Jyske Ensemble, which lasted until 1992. Since 1993 the orchestra has been under the artistic and administrative leadership of Scottish-born conductor David Riddell. Today, the orchestra is built around a permanent core of ten musicians, a wind quintet and a string quintet, supplemented by additional musicians as and when required. Its permanent home is the arts centre Vaerket, where around twenty subscription concerts (orchestral and chamber) are played every season. The orchestra also tours extensively, recently visiting Scotland, Estonia, Sweden and Iceland. Other activities include numerous concerts at other venues throughout Denmark (including the orchestra's annual festival of concerts in the many fine castles of the local region), CD recordings, radio broadcasts, workshops and regular performances as opera orchestra for the Danish National Opera, Den Jyske Opera, and Århus Summer Opera. In particular, Randers Chamber Orchestra has received much critical acclaim for its performance as house orchestra for Arhus Summer Opera, and this fruitful collaboration has recently given birth to an ambitious new opera trilogy, Tugt og Utugt i Mellemtiden by Danish composer John Frandsen. In addition the orchestra has experimented in hybrid concert formats by linking traditional music with other art forms such as painting, dance, literature and jazz, and by performing side by side with artists and performers from these genres. Randers City Council, Arhus County Council and the Danish Music Council fund Randers Chamber Orchestra.
