Born in what was then Leningrad, Roman Mekinulov began cello studies at the age of five at the Leningrad Music School. After earlier competition awards, at the age of sixteen he entered the Rimsky-Korsakov College where he studied with Georgy Ginovker. In 1988 he was awarded First Prize in the Leningrad Chamber Music Competition and the following year moved to the United States, continuing his studies at The Juilliard School as a pupil of Harvey Shapiro. In 2001 he was appointed principal cellist of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, with which he has regularly appeared as a soloist, and a career that has brought an additional commitment to chamber music. He maintains a very busy and successful teaching studio and is a founding member and the Artistic Director of the Bravo International Chamber Music Workshop, a comprehensive chamber music workshop for high school and college students which takes place every year during the months of July and February.
