An Emmy award-winner, Shu-ying Li sang the title-rôle in Madama Butterfly for New York City Opera, which won a Creative Arts category of Outstanding Special Classical Music and Dance Programs for PBS’s Live from Lincoln Center telecast. In September 2008 she won the Diva Award and the Stanley Tausend Award for the outstanding performer of New York City Opera in the United States. She won second prize at the 2004 55th Gian Battista Viotti International Voice Competition in Italy and second prize at the 1988 Fourth Budapest International Voice Competition in Hungary. Her career has taken her to Italy, Spain, France, Canada, New Zealand, Israel, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia and Hong Kong, and her major rôles have included Cio-cio San (Madama Butterfly), Mimì (La Bohème), Manon (Manon Lescaut), Tosca (Tosca), Suor Angelica (Suor Angelica), Elisabetta (Don Carlo), Violetta (La traviata), Ariadne (Ariadne auf Naxos) Marguerite (Faust), Adina (L’elisir d’amore), the Countess (Le nozze di Figaro), Micaela (Carmen), the title rôle in the world première of Bun-ching Lam’s Wenji at New York’s Lincoln Center Festival and the Hong Kong International Arts Festival, and the Princess in Tan Dun’s Tea in Shanghai and Lyon. She has taught at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music Vocal Department since 2005.
