Sten Byriel trained at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Aarhus and the Opera Academy in Copenhagen. He made his debut as Papageno in Mozart’s The Magic Flute in 1985, and since then has been engaged as a soloist at the Royal Theatre, Copenhagen, where his roles have included Mozart characters such as Figaro and Dr. Bartolo in The Marriage of Figaro, Leporello and the Commandant in Don Giovanni, and Guglielmo in Così fan tutte. He has also sung Henrik in Carl Nielsen’s Masquerade, Colline in Puccini’s La Bohème, Escamillo in Bizet’s Carmen, Dulcamara in Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, the Grand Inquisitor and the Monk in Verdi’s Don Carlos and Osmin in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail. He gave guest performances as Figaro at the Wiener Volksoper in 1989-93, and since 1997 he has been a guest soloist at the Staatsoper in Berlin. Sten Byriel has sung Marsk Stig in Heise’s King and Marshal on DR-TV, the Athlete and the Animal Tamer in Alban Berg’s Lulu at Grønnegårdsteatret and in the DR production in Ridehuset at Christiansborg Palace, and has premiered works like Don Juan Returns from the Wars by Erik Højsgaard and Thorvaldsen by Anne Linnet. Sten Byriel has appeared in productions at Musikteatret Undergrunden, Hotel Proforma, The Other Opera, Holland House, Rialto Teatret and Det Ny Teater, and sings regularly with the Danish regional orchestras and the DR ensembles. He also appears on a number of CDs, for example with songs by Heise and Lange-Müller, as well as on complete recordings of Berg’s Lulu and Salome by Richard Strauss.
