Penguin Guide, January 2009

The Arthaus DVD of Gluck’s Alceste in the 1776 Paris version offers a performance in modern dress, mainly impressive for the fine singing of Catherina Naglestad in the title-role and the strong support given by the chorus, a key player in this reform opera. Naglestad rises splendidly to the challenge of the big numbers, not least Divinités du Styx. The conductor Constantinos Carydis draws playing from the orchestra that has clearly been influenced by period practice and though the stylized movements of the chorus in a modern setting are now always effective the result is strong and convincing, with the incidental roles also well sung.

…musically, this is the most complete rendering I’ve encountered of the score and it’s worth having for that alone. I’ll be keeping it around myself for that reason. © 2007 Fanfare Read complete review
