Penguin Guide, January 2009

Like Rostropovich, the Burmese cellist Wen-Sinn Yang has carefully chosen the venue for his recording, in this case the intimate atmosphere of the small Romanesque Church of St Servatius, high up in the Bavarian Alps, and its warm acoustic proves perfect for his recording. Also like Rostropovich, Yang introduces and concludes each of the six Suites (in German, but with surtitles) with his own perceptive comments on Bach and his music, its performance, colouring and expressive feeling. These comments are of course optional, but in any case excellent CD recordings of all six works are included as a bonus for alternative performance to the visual versions. So one has the best of both worlds. Yang’s performances are superb, obviously deeply felt and full of subtlety in their phrasing, both in their control of light and shade as well as in their bowing. They are undoubtedly inspired in their totally spontaneous inner feeling and are every bit as satisfying as those of Rostropovich. The recording is even finer in its naturalness of tone and focus, and one feels constantly in the presence of Bach’s own thoughts. The camera angles are unfussy, often moving away to survey the church background, but for the most part concentrating on the music-making itself.

Fanfare, November 2008

I was…much taken by the excellent Bach cello suites played by Wenn-Sin Yang on both DVD and CD. He puts passion and intelligence into his playing, not into deep breathing and soulful writhing.
