Kurt Moses
American Record Guide, March 2013

…Christa Ludwig [is]…in glorious, ravishing voice and offers a compelling performance, one of the best Leonores I’ve seen on stage…her voice is strong, solid, and quite beautiful…

Walter Berry…is a fierce, powerful Pizzaro. Josef Greindl is a sympathetic Rocco, he sings his ‘Gold’ aria smoothly and acts his role well. William Dooley…acts with dignity and compassion…Barry McDaniel…makes a powerful impression with his beautiful tone and emotional delivery.

Rother…leads a gripping performance… © 2013 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide

Robert J Farr
MusicWeb International, September 2012

The production was in the hands of theatre director Gustav Rudolf Sellner and his chief set designer Wilhelm Reinking. It is a traditional production…with costumes and set all within period.

There are several particularly notable interpretations. First and foremost is the masculine-looking Leonore of Christa Ludwig. Her singing of the demanding Abscheulicher…is appealing in tone, expression and lyricism…Likewise Walter Berry who sings strongly and portrays a particularly brutal Pizarro with flashing eyes and malevolent facial expression. Berry conveys Pizarro’s cynicism perfectly…

The often-underrated James King…is a tower of acting and singing strength, hitting the demanding notes of his big aria at the start of act 2 with impact and accuracy…The young Lisa Otto plays an impressionable and winsome young girl to perfection. She sings with light tone, vocal flexibility and good characterisation…The chorus are outstanding… © 2012 MusicWeb International Read complete review

Music Media Monthly, April 2012

This historic and nicely restored 1963 performance from the Deutsche Oper Berlin is now available for the first time on DVD. Fidelio was featured at the company’s 1912 opening of the Deutsches Opernhaus…The three headliners—Christa Ludwig as Leonore, Walter Berry as Don Pizarro, and James King as Florestan—are absolutely top shelf. © 2012 Music Media Monthly Read complete review
