Chris Morgan
Scene Magazine, February 2014

The centenary of Solti’s birth took place in 2012, and as might be expected for such a pivotal figure, there were a number of tribute concerts mounted, as well as several CDs and DVDs released to commemorate the event. Among them, this heartfelt tribute to the conductor’s founding of the World Orchestra for Peace, an ensemble of musicians committed to the promotion of cross-cultural understanding. Narrated by Lady Valerie Solti, the conductor’s wife, viewers are treated to personal recollections and commentary which contextualizes the pieces presented here, including samples of Mozart and Mahler among others, as well as a full performance of Bartok’s Concerto for Orchestra. Under the baton of Solti’s hand-picked successor Valery Gergiev, the players of the World Orchestra deliver a performance that is poignant, powerful and effortless. A sublime delight. © 2014 Scene Magazine Read complete review

Opera News, January 2014

…even without a Wagner overture or orchestral interlude, the program has its own logic. It is played by the fine World Orchestra for Peace…These major instrumentalists from more than twenty-five countries remind us of Solti’s cosmopolitanism as well as his interest in building strong ensembles.

The two main singers are ideally selected and ideally responsive to the occasion. Having worked with Solti early in their careers, René Pape and Angela Gheorghiu honor him with solos performed in taut, focused Solti style.

Valery Gergiev conducts the concert suitably…he showers attention on the individual instrumental sections in Bartók’s Concerto for Orchestra…the bird’s-eye shots from high above the stage offer a moving parallel to the spectacular climax of Mahler’s “Adagietto” from the Symphony No 5. © 2014 Opera News Read complete review

Music Media Monthly, July 2013

The [centenary concert] is hosted by Lady Valerie Solti, a charming speaker and natural presence on stage. The players perform…with gusto before Gergiev’s…baton and a receptive audience.

Solti’s Vision, a brief film about the World Orchestra for Peace that is included on this disc, describes the genesis of the orchestra at a 1992 concert celebrating Solti’s 80th birthday in which top-notch players were gathered from the world’s great orchestras that Solti had conducted. Overall, the performance and documentary on this disc are intimate and interesting. Recommended. © 2013 Music Media Monthly Read complete review

…we have this Solti Centenary Concert commemorating his birth October 21, 1912. Concerts were presented in Carnegie Hall and in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall; we have the latter, from October 21, 2012, and it is a festive occasion. There are video tributes from many of the musicians Solti worked with including Plácido Dominto, Renée Fleming, Anne-Sophia Mutter, Dame Evelyn Glennie, Andras Schiff and Murray Perahia. Angela Gheorghiu and René Pape perform music of Mozart and Verdi. Video is excellent, audio good enough considering that the concert was presented in an acoustically problematic venue. An interesting issue, and a fine tribute to a major conductor of the century. © 2013 ClassicalCDReview.com Read complete review
