…conductor Daniel Barenboim does a pretty impressive job.

[Lance Ryan] sang Siegfried’s stentorian moments with steely power… He was at his best in the softer, more lyric passages just before his death. He is serviceable throughout the opera, coping as most Siegfrieds do with the composer’s most excessive demands. © 2015 Superconductor Read complete review

Barenboim’s conducting is…splendid, binding the music very well in a way that is completely foreign to many noted conductors who attempt Wagner…the visuals are consistently stunning: shimmering curtains of moving light behind both dancers and singers…

Cassiers’ production, along with the creative lighting designs of Enrico Bagoli, are consistently interesting and beautiful… © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Fanfare, September 2014

Barenboim makes sense of every page of the drama, often finding moments of genius in unexpected places…By savoring every unexpected, ambiguous harmony, the conductor shows us how sophisticated Wagner had become with his musical language by his penultimate opera. The La Scala orchestra is with Barenboim every step of the way and ArtHaus Music provides weighty, dynamic, and richly detailed sonics. The best vocal performances include those from Mikhail Petrenko as Hagen, who oozes malevolence from every pore, and Gerd Grochowski, whose Gunther is no foppish cipher, but rather a complex man with insecurities that his half-brother is prepared to exploit. © 2014 Fanfare Read complete review

Daniel Barenboim’s celebration of the Wagner bicentenary culminated in the completion of a new Ring cycle…These DVDs of La Scala performances…are most notable for showcasing this conductor’s supreme command of the epic lyricism that goes to the heart of the Wagner style…the La Scala orchestra has no weak links…

Barenboim’s flair for drawing out often under-characterised details…is one outstanding feature…this is an absorbing portrait of a fine Wagner conductor at the height of his powers. © 2014 Gramophone Read complete review on Gramophone
