Arlo McKinnon
Opera News, January 2015

This studio recording gives the production an advantage: the voices are never buried…so one hears every line with utmost clarity. Baritone Günter Reich is convincing and charismatic as the tailor, Schimele Soroker. He captures both the anxiety of Schimele’s poverty and his unsophisticated bumptiousness when trying to move in upper-class social circles. The great Wagnerian mezzo Marta Mödl gives a fine supporting performance as Schimele’s wife. The supporting cast is impeccable, and Heinrich Hollreiser leads the orchestra with dynamic intensity.

200.000 Taler is a delightful, entertaining look at the human comedy. And this excellent film version presents the opera in the warm, loving light it deserves. © 2014 Opera News Read complete review

American Record Guide, September 2014

The performance could scarcely be bettered. Leading the way is the versatile Martha Mödl, capable of singing the great Wagner roles and creating cameos that endeared her to many audiences. Her Ettie-Mennie (Bailke’s mother) complains eternally, but there is nothing to complain about in Mödl’s performance. The cast is populated by notable character actors and major artists. The elegant tenor Ernst Haefliger sings caressingly as the romantic Motel. Reich blusters and preens as the amiable Schimele. Weiss not only sings with pure beauty but manages to make a sympathetic figure out of the rather nasty Bailke. Each singer in this 13-member cast blends exquisitely with the others. Hollreiser has the orchestra playing almost as a character in itself—a rich accompaniment. © 2014 American Record Guide Read complete review on American Record Guide
