RECITAL WITH RENÉE FLEMING (A) - Vienna at the Turn of the 20th Century (NTSC) 102196
RECITAL WITH RENÉE FLEMING (A) - Vienna at the Turn of the 20th Century (Blu-ray, HD) 108117

[Fleming seems] at home with Mahler’s Rückert-Lieder. Her voice beautifully encompasses the arching melodic lines of “Ich atmet’ einen linden Duft,” and the dark, almost hollow sounds she makes in her chest register are apt for the despairing “Um Mitternacht.” Pikulski’s piano accompaniment is particularly sensitive in this song, which has the emotional arc of a three-act opera.

In “Erwartung”, Fleming expertly establishes the moonlit scene and the wisp of a story. © 2015 Opera News Read complete review

The WholeNote, December 2014

This glittering concert at the acoustically perfect Golden Hall of the Musikverein hall, Vienna is a virtual compendium of lieder over almost 50 years. From Mahler and Zemlinsky to Korngold and Strauss, Fleming’s recital tells in music the story of the Golden Age of the great city on the Danube. Polish pianist Maciej Pikulski offers sensitive, Gerald Moore-like piano support. This beautiful disc may prompt listeners to get dressed in their Sunday best before pressing the start button. © 2014 The WholeNote Read complete review

Scene Magazine, November 2014

Together…[Fleming and Pikulski] masterfully evoke the mood of old Vienna…Listeners swoon and passions run high, but nary a note goes afoul between this pair of world-class musicians. Their poise and passionate engagement is a testimony to the durability of these decades-old songs, and the stirring version of George Gershwin’s ‘Summertime’ that caps off the concert serves as proof of that fact. © 2014 Scene Magazine Read complete review

The Mahler songs find Fleming at her best…

Major kudos to Maciej Pikulski for truly showing what an asset a great collaborative pianist is! © 2014 Operagasm Read complete review, October 2014

Fleming has a marvelous voice, supple, even and expressive throughout all its registers, and she is simply the best performer singing today in certain works, such as Richard Strauss’ Four Last Songs…Maciej Pikulski provides appropriate piano accompaniment that complements Fleming without ever coming close to upstaging her. The music is well-chosen and clearly reflects Fleming’s personal tastes… © 2014 Read complete review

Robert Benson, October 2014

Maciej Pikulski is…[an] excellent accompanist, and the adoring audience obviously enjoys the soprano’s emotional interpretations of a rather wide range of repertory…Video is brilliant, audio equally good. © 2014 Read complete review
